Instead of being brought back whole cloth, Steve is brought back in the body of some other dude who, I guess, just goes into an extended blackout for the duration? Diana sees Steve as we see him-Christ Pine-but in the movie he’s actually in another man’s body. And his sacrifice this time around-or Diana’s, I suppose-feels less powerful and, well, repetitive.Īctually, it’s worse than that. It’s a little bit less great, a little cheapened, by his reappearance in WW84. Steve sacrificing himself in the first movie was a great, moving scene. Unfortunately, it ends up feeling like a retread of a much better moment we’ve already witnessed. In order to defeat Cheetah and Maxwell Lord (Pedro Pascal) who ends up becoming the wishing stone (more on this in a minute) Barbara has to give up the ghost and let Steve go for good (until they bring him back in Wonder Woman 3). Diana’s price for her wish is the gradual loss of her powers, much like Barbara’s is the gradual loss of her humanity and kindness. In the end, we learn that the only way to defeat the wish rock is to revoke one’s wish. This leads to some funny moments (largely already spoiled in the trailers, unfortunately) and another bittersweet goodbye. Honestly, it feels more like a movie studio’s excuse to bring back a popular actor/character for the sequel than an organic story development. And you will recall from the first film, that her and Chris Pine’s character, Steve “I have two first names” Trevor, didn’t even have sex. Somehow Diana Prince has not made a more meaningful romantic connection in 66 years. She wants to be like her new friend, tough and classy and beautiful-and can you blame her?
